In 1982 the Group 2 regulations gave way to the new Group A, which required the production of at least 5000 series units for each model. The 635 had just been renewed and to homologate the new E24 / 1 (635CSi) BMW did not have time to apply for homologation. In 1982, the 528i E28 was therefore used. In 1983 the 635 CSi Gr.A was finally ready and proved very competitive for four years, keeping up with the competition from Rover, Jaguar and Ford. Some cars in private hands continued to run until the early nineties.
