In the midst of the GTI boom, a handful of manufacturers were content to mount a more powerful engine on a lighter chassis to obtain sporty versions of their sedans. This was the case of the Opel Corsa Gsi (type A), presented in 1987 and equipped with a 1600cc injection engine of only 100 horsepower, however enough to compete with the Rover 114 GTI and the Citroen AX Sport. The low weight (only 840kg) did the rest. In 1992, Siemens multipoint injection and catalyst were introduced. The first generation Corsa Gsi was produced until 1993.
