A vitaminized New Beetle was unveiled at the 1999 Detroit Motor Show. Aesthetically it was recognized for several sporty details, including a rear wing, side skirts, dual exhausts and 18-inch wheels. Under the bonnet was a 3200cc 24-valve VR6 engine, the one used in the racing New Beetle Cup, mated to a 6-speed Haldex transmission. Inside, there were orange Recaro seats, carbon door panels and various lightened details. "Finally a people's car accessible to the rich", as the VW advertisement of the time said. Only 250 copies of the RSI were produced, with an exaggerated price but also with a high collectible value.
