The death of Alberto Ascari and the difficult economic situation put an end to the activity of the Lancia racing department in the mid-fifties. Thanks to an operation managed by Fiat and A.C. Italy, all the material used by Lancia was acquired by Ferrari in July 1955. In addition to technicians, drivers and engineers, 8 examples of the F1 D50, designed in 1953 by Vittorio Jano, also arrived in Maranello. The car had a 2485cc V8 and 265 horsepower. With Lancia, the D50 had competed few GPs, from the end of 1954 to mid-1955. In 1956, under the Ferrari brand and in the hands of Musso, Castellotti, Collins and Fangio, the D50 won five GPs and allowed Fangio to conquer the his fourth F1 title, before returning to Maserati.
