In the 1980s, Land Rover, a member of the Austin Rover group, survived thanks to the 90 and 110 models and the Ranges. At the same time, Japanese brands were becoming more and more threatening with their competition. It was in 1984 that the Jay project was launched, Land Rover's answer to this competition. A very radical restyling produced a totally new model even if the substantial basis remained that of the Range Rover, including the V8 and turbodiesel engines (200 Tdi and 300 Tdi from 1994).
