After being defeated in 1987 by Porsche, Jaguar returned to Le Mans 1988 in the role of favorite, with the XJR9-LM 12-cylinder engine with 7000cc. And for the British brand it was the good year, thanks to the car driven by Lammers / Wallace / Dumfries that after a very quick start were always competitive and managed to beat the Porsche 962C of Bell / Stuck / Ludwig by not even one lap. Jaguar thus achieved its sixth success at Le Mans in one of the most exciting races ever. Lammers was the second Dutchman (after Van Lennep in 1971) to win the 24 Hours race. The Jaguar would win again in Le Mans in 1990 with the XJR12, an improved version of the XJR9.
