Introduced in 2009 to replace the now obsolete R10, the LMP1 class Audi R15 TDI was equipped with a 5500cc V10 turbodiesel with direct injection. The lighting groups with LED technology and the lithium battery for the electrical systems were part of the technological innovations introduced with this model. The carbon frame was designed in Germany and built in Italy by Dallara. Many innovations were introduced from the aerodynamic point of view, some of which gave rise to disputes about their regularity. The R15 TDI made its debut with a victory at the 12 Hours of Sebring but was defeated by Peugeot at Le Mans. For 2010, Audi studied a completely redesigned version, more effective and competitive.
