At the end of the seventies, to produce a new model at the base of the range without excessive investment, Alfa Romeo decided to use the mechanics of the Alfasud on a body produced by an external manufacturer. An agreement was reached with Nissan and an agreement signed in October 1980 gave birth to ARNA (Alfa Romeo Nissan Autoveicoli). The new car was originally intended to be derived from the Nissan Cherry N10 series, but then with the release of the new generation the YK model was used. The Arna was presented at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show in two versions: 1.2 3-door L and 1.2 5-door SL. In 1984 the Ti was introduced, featuring the revvy 1351cc engine delivering 86 bhp, replaced with the 1.5 litre in a very limited series issued in 1985. Some updates were carried out in the whole 1985 range. The Arna was a light, bright, reliable and also economical car but the public never accepted an Alfa Romeo based on a Nissan. The advertising campaign that was anything but brilliant and the change in exchange rates between the lira and the yen did the rest.
