The Maserati Quattroporte II, which replaced the original Quattroporte out of production in 1969, had the 3-liter Citroën 114.56.30 engine and a bodywork designed by Bertone as known. But before the final Quattroporte II (signed AM123) went into production, the coachbuilder Frua had given his own interpretation of the future sedan. The Quattroporte II Frua (known with the project number AM121), was much more than an exercise in style: it was a very serious proposal, which could have resulted in a series production without too many technical difficulties. The Quattroporte II Frua was presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1971 and in Geneva in 1972. Unfortunately, the commercial policies of the time, linked to the production needs of the owner Citroën, prevented any development of this project, favoring the adoption of French components. Two examples of the Quattroporte II Frua should have been built, chassis 002 and 004, of which the first was sold directly by the body shop. The 004 should be the car purchased in 1974 by Aga Khan, a great Maserati fan.
