Audi's first sporting saloon, the 80 GTE was introduced in October 1975, replacing the 80 GT with carburetors engine, which had been introduced in August 1973. The GTE was equipped with an injection version of the 1600cc unit (110BHP) which would later be also successfully used on the VW Golf GTI. For the German market the GTE was also available in a four-door version, while for the rest of the markets it was only offered in a two-door configuration. A “Rallye pack” was also available on the 2-door GTE, which included stiffer shock absorbers, a crankcase protector and a matt black bonnet. The 80 GTE went out of production in 1977, after being produced in almost 12,000 units.
