In 1952, the demand for more performing cars, also adaptable to use in competition, prompted Alfa Romeo to develop a slightly more powerful and sporty version of the 1900 sedan. The opportunity for the new version came on the eve of the Carrera Panamericana in '52, where the 1900 TI (TI standing for "Turismo Internazionale") made its racing debut. The main changes compared to the standard 1900 were a slight increase in the compression ratio (from 7.5: 1 to 7.7: 1) and an increase in the diameter of the valves. These improvements allowed for an increase in power from 90 to 100 horsepower. The 1900 TI's sporting career was more than satisfying, including a win in the 2-liter category at the 1953 Tour de France . The 1900 TI was later replaced by the 1900 TI Super, derived from the 1900 Super, with a larger displacement. 612 units of the 1900 TI were produced.
