Prost having left for Ferrari, Senna found himself the undisputed leader in McLaren for the 1990 season. In place of Prost came Gerhard Berger, who in turn came from Ferrari. The new McLaren MP4 / 5B, designed by Neil Oatley, had several improvements to the body and aerodynamics. The Honda RA100E engine remained in exclusive use at McLaren. During the season, Ferrari was very competitive and Alain Prost fought for the title from Senna. A maneuver by Senna, which hooked Prost to the first corner in the Japanese GP, was destined to stir controversy for years but in any case it secured the title to the Brazilian. In 1990 Senna had six victories: the United States, Monte Carlo, Canada, Germany, Belgium and Italy. Berger, on the other hand, finished third in the championship, with two second places (Brazil and San Marino) as the best result. McLaren took the constructors' championship with 121 points, against Ferrari's 110.
