Riding the Honda NRS500, Valentino Rossi largely dominated the 2001 season, a year after arriving in the premier class of the world championship. In 2000 he finished second behind Kenny Roberts jr and in 2001 he unleashed himself by winning 11 of the 16 races on the programme, distancing Max Biaggi (Yamaha) and Loris Capirossi (Honda).
