In 1964 Alfa Romeo presented the 1300 version of the Giulia, to meet the needs of a clientele who wanted a cheaper version and to replace the Giulietta, which had not been developed. The Giulia 1300 had the 1290cc twin cam engine of the Giulietta, updated and improved. In order not to create excessive competition with the Giulia TI 1600, the 1300 was very simplified, with rather poor finishes. Despite the rather poor performance of the engine, the Giulia 1300 was still the fastest “average” car in the world. A first bodywork update arrived in September 1967, while another version was launched in February 1969, following the bodywork and mechanical changes of the range. Production ceased in 1971. In 1966 a sportier version, the 1300 TI was presented, featuring a 5-speed gearbox and a stronger engine. The 1300 TI was discontinued in 1972.
