Jacques Villeneuve having left and Frentzen having not been reconfirmed, Williams got organized for the 1999 F1 season with two new drivers, Alex Zanardi, winner of the Champ Car World Series in 1997 and 1998, and Ralf Schumacher, who managed to free himself from the contract with the Jordan. The engines, now called Supertec, were none other than the old Mécachrome V10 (ex-Renault). The car was constantly developed throughout the year and despite not being able to compete with the very first, Williams finished fifth in the constructors' standings. Ralf Schumacher got a second place in Monza as best result, while Zanardi did not go beyond a seventh place, also in Monza.
