In Porsche history, concept cars are quite rare. The Panamericana, unveiled in Frankfurt in 1989, evoked the marque's sporting beginnings with the 550RS at the 1953 Carrera Panamericana. Like the production Targa, the Panamericana had a large folding canvas roof. The car was based on the Carrera 4 (3.6-liter, 250-horsepower 6-cylinder engine) and celebrated Ferry Porsche's 80th anniversary. In the Panamericana, some solutions could be glimpsed which were then taken up again on the 911 Targa model 993.
