The one-tonne version of the first front-wheel drive Renault commercial vehicle was born in 1965 on the basis of the previous 500 and 800kg of 1959 and fitted the swing cab doors. The Renault 8's 45hp engine was replaced by the R12's more resilient 43hp in 1968, when a more modern dashboard and stronger fenders also arrived. In 1969 the optical groups changed. The 1973 restyling with the grille with horizontal slits in place of the trapezoidal one accompanied the Estafette until the end of its career, in 1980.
