With the third generation of the Golf, Volkswagen tried to explore new sports solutions, after the various experiences accumulated with the GTI. The VR6 (1991-1998) adopted a 6-cylinder engine which made it a different car (not better, simply different) than the usual GTI, which continued to be produced. The 2792cc engine gave 174 horsepower. A four-wheel drive version of the VR6 was also made, called Synchro, more powerful (190 horsepower) but also heavier.
