This original car broke decisively with Volvo tradition. Equipped with retractable headlights, this 2-door was introduced in 1986. The robustness and reliability, unfortunately, were not in line with what buyers would expect from a Volvo. Nor were the engines particularly exciting: a Renault-sourced 109-horsepower 1.7-liter and a 110-horsepower 2-liter. A little more panache came with the 120 horsepower turbo engine in 1988. The Volvo 480 was produced until 1995.
