Although McLaren studied some developments on the 1968 M7 (versions B and C) during the 1969 season, the M7A used the previous year continued to be deployed regularly. Hulme raced there the whole season, also getting the victory in the final GP, in Mexico. Another private M7A was seen in 1969, that of Team Lawson, piloted by South African Basil Van Rooyen, who took part in the home GP by retiring. At the end of the season, McLaren took fourth place among the manufacturers behind Matra, Brabham and Lotus.
