The changes made to the WEC regulations in 2014 caused several changes in the LMP1 class Audi R18 e-tron quattro. The V6 turbodiesel engine was then further developed. The MGU-H element was added to the flywheel kinetic accumulator and also a secondary energy recovery system ERS (Energy Retrieval System) that worked with the turbocharger. The ERS was later abandoned as it did not guarantee substantial performance improvements. As was the custom for the LMP1, Audi perfected two aerodynamic configurations according to the circuits, one with low load (for example for Le Mans), the other with a higher load. In the year of Porsche's return, Audi still continued to be competitive, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
