The Lotus 24 was simply an improved version of the 21, capable of accommodating several V8 engines. During the course of 1962, however, it became quite clear that the car might at best be a good choice for a private team. Of the twelve units built, seven received the Coventry Climax FWMV V8 engine while five fitted the BRM V8. Parnell then built a few more looms. The 24 was however also used by the official team, waiting for the 25. The private teams that lined up the 24 were Rob Walker, UDT-Laystall, Brabham and Bowmaker-Parnell. The 24 ran in Formula 1 until the end of 1964.
