The Edsel brand has remained in the history of the car as a synonym for a commercial fiasco, especially from a marketing point of view. Edsel was the name of Henry Ford's son, who died in 1943. This range wanted to offer cars that were more luxurious than a normal Ford but less expensive than a Mercury. Discretion was certainly not one of the hallmarks of these cars, which featured an extravagant necklace-shaped grille, perhaps too much even for the US public of the time. Sales never reached the expected levels, despite the introduction in 1959 of a more economical 6-cylinder engine than the V8s used up to that time. Production, which began in 1958, came to a halt in November 1959, after 2,846 1960s Ranger models that were nothing more than slightly retouched Ford Galaxies.
