The arrival of reigning champion Dennis Hulme in McLaren was announced in October 1967. Robin Herd began designing the new M7A before moving to Cosworth, leaving Gordon Coppuck to complete the design. For 1967 the Bruce McLaren team also secured the supply of the Cosworth engines, thus being able to count on a very competitive team. In the first GP of the season, in South Africa, Hulme still had to use the old BRM-powered M5A, but starting from the GP both he and Bruce McLaren had the M7A-Cosworth at their disposal. Dan Gurney rented the spare M7A for the three last races of the season, too, in Canada, USA and Mexico. Hulme won in Italy and Canada, while McLaren was first in Belgium. At the end of the season, Hulme took third place among the drivers, inside Hill and Stewart, while McLaren was fifth. Thanks to the 49 points collected, McLaren finished second among the constructors, beaten only by Lotus.
