The Arrows team, which had been bought by Wataru Ohashi, became Footwork in 1991 for good. For the season, a three-year agreement was signed with Porsche for the supply of the V12 engine which marked the return of the German manufacturer to F1 after a five-year hiatus. In the first part of the season the old Arrows frame from 1990 was used; the new car, named FA12 and designed by Alan Jenkins, proved to be a real disaster, as well as the Porsche engine, which prevented Michele Alboreto and Alex Caffi from reaping any results. Caffi, stopped for a car accident, was temporarily replaced by Johansson. Risking to return to the teams forced to do pre-qualifying, Footwork took action by endorsing the separation from Porsche and opting for Ford DFR engines for the rest of the season. Alboreto, Schneider and Johansson continued to test with the Porsche engine with a view to a possible return, but the program was definitively stopped at the end of 1991.
