The McLaren M19 was a completely new project, carried out by Ralph Bellamy, as Gordon Coppuck was busy designing the car for Indy and Jo Marquart had left McLaren to move to the Huron. The car proved quite competitive in 1971, with Donohue finishing third in Canada behind the wheel of Penske's car. The M19 was also used in the following years, with several improvements but always with the traditional Ford Cosworth engine. At the wheel of the M19 raced Mark Donohue, Peter Gethin, David Hobbs, Denny Hulme, Jackie Oliver, Brian Redman, Peter Revson, Jody Scheckter.
