The German ATS team started the 1980 F1 season with the previous year's D3 model. During the season the new D4 was ready, designed by Gustav Brunner and Tim Wardrop. The D4 was equipped as usual with the Cosworth engine and Hewland gearbox and resembled the Williams FW07 in its lines. The D4 was also used during 1981.
