The 1800 evolution of the Alpine A110 was homologated in Group 4 in 1971, but the 1600 version continued to be used officially. As early as 1972, the 1800 began to be very competitive, albeit in need of a more robust transmission. In 1973, Renault became the majority owner of Alpine, but the rally program continued. The A110 1800 received a new gearbox derived from the R12 Gordini and some mechanical parts of the A310. In this configuration, the car managed to win the first edition of the World Rally, beating Fiat. The A110 also dominated the French Championship. In the following years, Alpine-Renault's budget was concentrated above all on the development of the sport-prototype and, in rallies, on the A310.
