Initially Porsche, engaged in the development of the 935 Group 5 for 1976, did not envisage also participating in the World Sports Championship with a Group 6. The decision to build a Group 6 prototype was taken very late, just in time to prepare what would was the 936. The new spider derived in terms of chassis and bodywork from the experiences acquired with the 908/3 and 917/10. The basic elements of the engine were those of the Carrera RSR Turbo which had raced in 1974: the 2142cc 6-cylinder unit, signed 911/78, had a power of around 520hp. The 936 proved to be competitive almost immediately and was also used in the 1976 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it obtained Porsche's third overall victory, after those of 1970 and 1971. The 936, further developed, had a long career that lasted until the early eighties.
