The presentation of the 250P took place on March 4, 1963, along with the launch of the 330 LMB. The 250P was the first car in a new family of V12 mid-engined sports-prototype Ferraris, a combination that proved to be an instant winner. The engine was a 310 horsepower 3000cc and the car was also at the forefront of aerodynamic shapes. The 250P was the car to beat in 1963 in the main races of the calendar: Scarfiotti / Bandini won at Le Mans, while Surtees / Mairesse won the 1000km of the Nurburgring.
