Long before becoming a movie star with "Back to the Future", the De Lorean was a true car produced in Northern Ireland and sold in the United States. Conceived to revolutionize the world of sports cars, the De Lorean (named after John Zachary De Lorean, its promoter) was, in its final version, developed by Lotus. The car was marketed from 1981 to 1982. Equipped with a 2849cc V6 and 130 horsepower, it was a flop mainly due to the poor quality of assembly. The adventure ended very soon when De Lorean was arrested for trafficking in cocaine, an accusation from which he was cleared. De Lorean died in 2005 and his DMC-12 nevertheless entered the history of the car as well as that of cinema
