Campari's victory in the 1928 Mille Miglia at the wheel of an experimental 6C, equipped with a compressor engine, proved that this technology had become sufficiently reliable even for use in road production. A small series of ten examples of the 6C 1500 was marketed for the more sporty customers. Lightened and equipped with an engine raised to about 76 horsepower, the 6C 1500 SS (Super Sport) was used mainly in competitions. In the same period, Alfa Romeo presented a version without a compressor, a slightly more civilized but an equally very sporty car.
