After the positive experience with the 1983 717C, Mazda further developed the Group C2 design by introducing the 727C. In 1984 the official team used the new car, while the BF Goodrich team raced with the Lola T616 powered by the same engine as the 727C. However, the 727C turned out to be not very fast compared to the competition, despite the progress shown also towards the performance of the 717C. In addition, Mazda continued to develop cars for the C2 category, avoiding the leap into the major class.
