The 1961 Formula 1 season saw Ferrari return to the top thanks to a revolutionary single-seater designed by Carlo Chiti, the 156 with a 1500cc engine placed in a central-rear position, in two configurations (65 and 120 °). American driver Phil Hill was world champion, but Ferrari lost von Trips on 10 September 1961 in Monza. Use of the 156 also continued in 1962, the year in which Ferrari was unable to repeat the successes of 1961.
