Already fielded at Le Mans in 1970, the long tail configuration of the 917 was revived for the 1971 edition of the 24 Hours. The shape was slightly revised, with a full-width rear spoiler, fairing rear wheels and a different front. The engine was the 4907cc 12-cylinder type 912/10 which was also equipped with the 917K. As had happened in 1970, it was a short-tailed 917 that won at Le Mans, while the three cars entered (one from Martini Racing, two from John Wyer) had to retire.
