Finally switched to the rear engine, Ferrari presented the 246 SP in February 1961, to be fielded in sports cars racing. The car was equipped with the exceptional 2500cc 270hp V6 engine, and was designed by Carlo Chiti, who was also responsible for the contemporary 156 of Formula 1. The 246 SP also showed a very careful study of aerodynamics, with two large front air intakes and a truncated tail. Particularly at ease on tortured tracks such as that of the Targa Florio, the 246 SP, alongside the TR60 and TR61, made a decisive contribution to Ferrari's conquest of the world sportscar championship.
