Building on the success of the single-brand trophy, Maserati developed a new version for track races for the 2004 season, called the Trofeo Light. The model was derived directly from the Trophy version, but had undergone considerable development to increase performance and to reduce weight. The engine, the well known 4200cc V8 engine, gave 430 HP at 7000 rpm (against the 413 at 7000 rpm of the Trophy) and was equipped with a specific exhaust system. The suspension scheme had been revised compared to the Trophy. The "Light" made its international debut at the 24 Hours of Daytona 2004 (GT class), then being campaigned in the whole Grand-Am season. In the same year, Light ran in the Italian GT Championship, immediately obtaining flattering results. In 2005 the AF Corse and Megadrive Light dominated the GT3 class of the Italian GT, with Danilo Zampaloni and Andrea Palma winning the drivers' standings, ahead of Ruy Aguas and Andrea Ceccato.
