A special gift The Ingolstadt-based Auto Union had the finger on the pulse and won the hearts of motorists with its model DKW “Sonderklasse” F91, which was initially presented to the public at the International Auto Show in 1953. The DKW F91 did not only fascinate customers in Germany, also abroad the mid-range car proved to be very popular. The Belgian importer for Auto-Union DKW cars was located in Brüssels, at the address Simon Michaux Garage, 49 Rue de Hollande. In the 1950s the company was led by the name giver itself, Simon Michaus, and for him it was not only economically appealing to deal with the Bavarian cars, he also identified himself with the cars. The Belgian saw the car with different eyes and was such enthused by the car that he even designed his own sportive bodywork for it. He used the 18th Birthday of his daughter as an opportunity realize his idea. Simon Michaux took one of the imported DKW F91 from the years 1954/55 and removed its standard bodywork. Onto the chassis he fitted his new hand-finished, sheet-metal car body, which did not a bit bear a resemblance to the original appearance. The design of front end, without a front bumper and its centrally arranged radiator grill fitted with the badges of the original manufactures Auto-Union and DKW, equaled the front of a real sportscar. In contrast to the front end, the rear was not so plainly designed. The rear featured two massive lateral fins in which the rear lights were fitted. Unfortunately, the reaction of his daughter as she received the especially for her designed car as a gift is not known. Later on the unique DKW was sold to France and from there it went into the Dutch collection “Stolze”.
