Starting in 1982, the presence of the Audi Quattro at the uphill race on Pikes Peak in Colorado left a lasting mark. After the abolition of Group B from the World Rally Championship at the end of 1986, the manufacturers looked for new outlets for their cars, and Audi developed a special version of its Sport Quattro S1 just for American racing, based on the Sport Quattro S1 (E2) which was entered in 1986 for Bobby Unser. At the wheel of the S1 Pikes Peak, Walter Rohrl managed to set the appalling time of 10’45 "85, dropping under the 11-minute barrier for the first time in history. The Quattro S1 Pikes Peak was equipped with a specially tuned 2110cc 5-cylinder turbo engine capable of around 600 horsepower at 8000 rpm. The gearbox was a six-speed manual. Particular attention has been paid to the aerodynamics. Pikes Peak 1987 also marked the last official works entry for an Audi Group B.
