At the 1991 Geneva Motor Show, Alfa Romeo presented the 164 Proteo prototype, which prefigured all-wheel drive versions for each model in the range. For the 33, the Permanent 4 was presented, which unlike the other 4x4 versions of the 33 had permanent traction. The engine was the 1712cc 4-cylinder with 133 horsepower. The 33 Permanent 4 was a very fast and fun compact. The denomination then became Q4 starting from 1992, when the 33 range underwent a restyling.
