The Surtees TS19 made its F1 debut at the 1976 South African GP; designed by John Surtees himself and Ken Sears, it was a well-built car that promised well. The engine was the Ford Cosworth V8; aerodynamics were particularly well taken care of, with a full-width nose and sloping side lines. Alan Jones and Brett Lunger obtained good results, and the TS19 was also used in 1977, with Vittorio Brambilla and a series of drivers alternating from race to race. The TS19 was also fielded in the first GPs of 1978.
