The Alfa Romeo Tipo 158 (nicknamed Alfetta) was designed in 1938 to participate in the “voiturettes” category, which from 1940 was to become the main category of single-seater races. The outbreak of the Second World War prevented development but the cars, already built, were hidden in some places in Melzo and Abbiategrasso, in Lombardy. After the war, Alfa restored the cars, which began racing in 1948, along with other pre-war models, such as the 308. The Alfetta was equipped with a 1479cc in-line 8-cylinder engine, which produced approximately 250 horsepower. The gearbox was 4-speed + reverse, and the curb weight was 700kg. It was a fast, balanced and very reliable car. In 1947 and 1948 the 158 became definitely dominant. The power of the 158 had meanwhile reached 275 HP thanks to the adoption of two-stage compressors. In 1949, due to the death of the team's best drivers (Jean-Pierre Wimille, Achille Varzi, Carlo Felice Trossi), Alfa Romeo decided to focus on the 1950 season, the debut of the F1 World Championship. The new technical regulations allowed normally aspirated engines up to 4500cc and supercharged ones up to 1500cc. The 158 prepared for F1 boasted around 350 HP at 8500 rpm and a further developed chassis. The 1950 season was a success, with 11 wins out of 11 races. Nino Farina was the first world champion, ahead of Juan-Manuel Fangio and Luigi Fagioli. The car was then modified again for 1951, taking the name of 159.
