After an excellent 1990 season, Ferrari confirmed Alain Prost and managed to sign an agreement with Jean Alesi, beating Williams and Tyrrell. The new car, signed 642, was designed by Migeot and Steve Nichols. The car's poor competitiveness, combined with political instability within Ferrari's sports management, generated a decidedly chaotic start to the season. Meanwhile Migeot began work on a new car, the 643, which debuted at the French GP. With the 642, Prost was second in the opening GP in the United States, while Alesi finished third in Monte Carlo.
