Having left Dan Gurney to form his team, on the eve of the 1966 F1 championship, Jack Brabham announced that the Brabham Racing Organization would hire Denis Hulme and use Australian Repco V8 engines. The Repco was based on an Oldsmobile block which was developed by Frank Hallam and Phil Irving for the Tasman championship. The displacement had been raised to 2994cc, for a power, all in all modest, of about 300 horsepower. Young John Judd was commissioned by Coventry Climax to further develop the Repco engine. Ron Tauranac modified the Brabham BT19 chassis, initially conceived for the 1500cc 16-cylinder Climax, to accommodate the Repco V8 type 620. The Hewland HD5 gearbox was initially used, then replaced by the DG300. Jack Brabham used the BT19 for the first 7 out of 9 GPs, winning in France, England, Holland and Germany, becoming world champion. Brabham, which in that year also used the BT11 and BT20, won the constructors' championship.

At Reims Jack Brabham achieved his first victory in the 1966 F1 world championship. The Australian driver scored 45 points that year, which earned him his third world title, after those won in 1959 and 1960 at the wheel of the Cooper-Climax.
