The already very competitive 1986 Williams FW11 underwent development for the 1987 Formula 1 season. Called the FW11B, it had been improved in aerodynamics, cooling systems and the Honda V6 engine was even more efficient and powerful. An intelligent suspension system was also developed over the course of the season and was first used in Monza. In 1987 Williams dominated the scene, winning the drivers 'championship with Nelson Piquet and the constructors' world championship.

Very strong in 1987, Nigel Mansell however had to give in to teammate Nelson Piquet who won his third world title. Mansell often proved faster than Piquet, taking victory in 6 GPs and scoring 8 pole positions and 3 fastest laps. However, in Suzuka, Japan, he had an accident during practice, which caused him to miss that GP and the following one in Australia.
