1997 was the season of Ferrari's return to the top of Formula 1 after several troubled years. The F310B was the evolution of the 1996 F310, which Schumacher had driven to victory on a few occasions. The engine was the 2998cc V10, with a power of around 730hp at 16,000 rpm. The F310B proved to be competitive and reliable, allowing Schumacher to fight for the title with Jacques Villeneuve at the last race in Jerez de la Frontera but a maneuver by the German driver to the detriment of Villeneuve led to his retirement. This also resulted in a disqualification which took away Schumacher's second place in the drivers' standings.
There were five victories for Michael Schumacher in 1997. The second, the German driver achieved at the Canadian GP in Montreal, where he started in pole position. The race was interrupted after Olivier Panis' accident.
