Seeking to make up for a rather disappointing 1962 F.1 season, Ferrari presented an "interim" version of the 156, which debuted at the International Trophy at Silverstone. Forghieri designed a lighter body, adapting suspensions inspired by the English school. The gearbox was the one used starting from the end of 1962, combined with the 120° Dino V6 engine. With the new Bosch injection, the engine developed over 200hp.
In 1963 John Surtees ranked fourth in the F1 world championship with 22 points. His best performance was the victory at the German GP, where the English driver, starting from second position, prevailed on the difficult Nurburgring track, also setting the fastest lap. At the British GP, at Silverstone, Surtees finished second, also setting the fastest lap on that occasion.
