Introduced in 1991, the 850 marked the debut of front-wheel drive on the larger Volvos. The sedan was followed in 1993 by the station wagon version. Also appreciated for its dynamic qualities, the 850 was particularly sought after for its in-line 5-cylinder engine. In the turbo configuration (850 T5) the power was remarkable: 225 horsepower. In 1995, with the collaboration of TWR and Porsche, two even sportier versions came out, the T5-R and the R (respectively with 240 and 250 horsepower engines). The 850 went out of production in 1997.
