In March 2006, the second generation of Lamborghini Murcielago was presented, the LP640-4, which replaced the LP580-4 (2001-2006). The displacement increased from 6192 to 6496cc, and the power reached 640 horsepower, as indicated by the numerical code. The Murcielago thus became the most powerful production GT in world production, with the exception of the Bugatti Veyron, unattainable with its 1001 horsepower, or the more artisanal productions such as Saleen, Koenigsegg or Gumpert. The second series Murcielago received revised and optimized aerodynamics and some stylistic changes, such as the new rear lights. The LP640-4 remained in production until 2010.
