KESS-MODEL - FERRARI - ZAGATO ES1 1993

At the beginning of the 1990s Ercole Spada, a precocious genius of automotive design, returned to Zagato. Spada had designed many of the most iconic cars marked with the legendary letter «Z», such as the Aston Martin DB4 GT or the Giulietta SZ. Spada then dedicated himself to other brands, such as Ford or BMW or the Italian studio IDEA, designing dozens of successful cars, including the BMW 7 Series type E32 or the Fiat Tipo. Based on a Ferrari 512TR, Spada with the Zagato bodywork presented the FZ93, an exercise in style that wanted to reflect - as the press release stated - "the permanent desire of Elio and Gianni Zagato to look beyond contemporary design". For the FZ93 Spada chose to take inspiration from the Formula 1 universe, with a front bonnet that evoked the nose of a single-seater and a massive use of carbon. The rear hood took the shape of a large NACA air intake. The interior has also been completely modified. On an aesthetic level, other elements that had to recall the world of competitions were the OZ wheels with the red edge and a series of stickers that corresponded to the technical suppliers of the project: PPG, Pirelli, Sparco, OZ. The car did not have a commercial following but certain solutions such as the Formula 1 nose-style bonnet probably inspired other cars of the 2000s, such as the Ferrari Enzo or the Mercedes SLR and SLK (R171).

In 1994 the FZ93 made a second appearance, this time renamed ES1, in honor of its designer: the black parts on the sides became red, the stickers disappeared and the insides of the rims abandoned the two-tone red-aluminium to be painted in black.
